Sandstone Paving Across Wiltshire
Natural sandstone brings warmth, texture and individual character to patios, paths and garden features. We install sandstone paving throughout Wiltshire, combining carefully selected stone with proper groundwork, thoughtful layouts and neat finishing to create outdoor spaces designed for everyday use.
Indian Sandstone Patios Across Wiltshire
Indian sandstone is a popular patio material because every slab has its own subtle variation. Differences in shade, markings and texture give the finished surface a more natural appearance than paving manufactured to look completely uniform.
We install sandstone paving for:
- Garden patios and dining areas
- Courtyards and terraces
- Front and rear garden paths
- Steps and raised areas
- Property entrances
- Areas surrounding garden rooms
Before designing the patio, we look at the available space, access, sunlight and the way you use the garden. A family dining area needs enough room for chairs to be moved comfortably, while a path should follow the route people naturally take.
We also plan the finished levels and falls carefully. Rainwater needs to move away from the property without the patio appearing noticeably uneven or steep.
Riven and Smooth Sandstone Finishes
Sandstone is available with different surface textures and edge details. The right choice will depend on the property, the desired appearance and how the finished area will be used.
Common options include:
- Traditional riven sandstone
- Smooth or lightly textured finishes
- Hand-cut slab edges
- Sawn edges for cleaner lines
- Calibrated paving for consistent thickness
- Tumbled stone with an aged appearance
Riven paving has a naturally split surface that suits cottages, period houses and established gardens. Sawn sandstone provides straighter edges and a cleaner finish, making it suitable for more contemporary layouts.
Older properties around Trowbridge, Bradford-on-Avon, Corsham and Devizes often work well with paving that has softer textures and varied colouring. Newer homes may suit larger-format sandstone with regular joints and defined edges.
We can show you samples and explain how natural variation will affect the finished patio.
Sandstone Colours, Patterns and Edging
Sandstone is available in a range of colours, from warm brown and golden blends to softer greys and cooler natural shades. Because it’s a natural product, no two slabs will be identical.
Design options can include:
- Mixed-size traditional laying patterns
- Single-size contemporary layouts
- Contrasting block-paved borders
- Matching sandstone edging
- Curved patio and path edges
- Decorative features around planted areas
Before laying the stone, we mix slabs from different packs and position them thoughtfully. This spreads the colour variation naturally across the area rather than creating noticeable patches.
Secure edging helps retain the paving and gives the design a definite finish. It can also form a tidy boundary between the paved surface, lawn and flowerbeds.
Natural Sandstone for Patios, Paths and Steps
Using the same sandstone across connected garden areas can make the space feel more cohesive. A main patio may lead into a side path, a set of steps or a smaller seating area elsewhere in the garden.
Our sandstone paving contractors install:
- Main patios and seating spaces
- Garden and side-access paths
- Front-door entrance paths
- Paved steps between levels
- Raised terraces
- Borders and connecting areas
Correct installation is essential. Natural stone varies slightly in thickness, so every slab needs to be individually bedded and adjusted. We use a full supporting bed rather than leaving hollow spaces beneath the paving.
Our Sandstone Installation Process
We begin by assessing the area, checking the existing ground, access, drainage and finished levels. We then discuss the sandstone options, layout and edging details before providing a clear quotation.
Once the work is approved, the existing surface is removed where necessary and the ground is excavated and prepared with a suitable compacted sub-base. This creates a stable foundation for the natural stone and helps reduce movement or uneven areas.
Each sandstone slab is individually selected, prepared and laid on a full supporting bed, with careful attention given to levels, falls, cuts and joints. Once the paving is complete, we finish the joints, inspect the area and leave the site clean and ready to use.
Site Visit and Planning
We inspect the area, measure the available space and assess access, levels and drainage.
Material Selection
You’ll choose the sandstone colour, texture, slab sizes and any edging details. We then provide a clear written quotation.
Ground Preparation
The area is excavated where necessary before a suitable sub-base is installed and compacted.
Paving Installation
Each slab is selected, prepared and laid on a full bed. The surface levels, falls, cuts and joints are checked as the work progresses.
Jointing and Handover
